Please begin Daddy Long Legs. I'd love for you to finish half the book, but I prefer quality to quantity. Read at a pace that allows you to enjoy the book. Please tell me what you think of the book so far. Is this a book you'd include as a "must read" for everyone? Why, or why not?
What a great book! I definitely think "Daddy Long Legs" is a "must read." As I first started reading, I couldn't help but be a little creeped out that this random trustee offered to pay for this little orphan girl's education and only had to write him monthly letters in return. But the more I read, the more intrigued I was with Daddy Long Legs, and I think that's what makes this book a "must-read." As Judy writes her letters to her benefactor we get to see her grow and become her true self. But the more she writes, the more the reader is dying to know just who Daddy Long Legs is. The intrigue keeps you hooked and guessing. I figured out who Daddy Long Legs was somewhere in the middle of the book, but the author did throw me when she mentioned that she was also writing letters with Jimmie McBride and Master Jervie. That was when I was unsure if I truly knew or not and kept me sucked into the book until the end. Finding out Daddy Long Legs was indeed Master Jervie, I was both glad, but also creeped out. Judy looked to this person as a father figure, and now she is going to marry him. It's kind of gross, but at the same time, the romantic in me loves this happy ending. All Judy really wanted was to be loved and have a family, and she got that in the end. All in all- a definite "must read!" -Reeba Sullivan
ReplyDeleteHi Ancient Art,
ReplyDeleteThis book was a delight! I love the story. This made for a wonderful read aloud! You know that everyone loves orphan stories and this was no exception! Jerusha Abbot is an 18 yr old orphan who writes s subversive essay and attracts the attention of a trustee. He offers to pay for her education to become a writer only if she'd agree to write to him about her education. The rest of this story is told through Judy's letters to her trustee, whom she names Daddy Long Legs, because this is the only thing she can remember about him. The letters are funny and enthusiastic, the reader realizes something before Judy does which makes for all the more amusing reading. What really surprised me after reading this positive and uplifting book was that the author died two days after childbirth, I hope her daughter found some message in this story.
Thank you,

Oh wow I’m going have to look that up. Because I really do like her writing style.
DeleteI’m actually enjoying myself, reading Daddy Long Legs. Jerusha catches a glimpse of a bald tall guy as she’s called down to the office to speak to Mrs Lippett. And discovers this tall unfamiliar man is not fond of girls, but finds her writing amusing so decides to pay her way through college, to become a writer. And I’m going to stop right there. Because that was enough for me to want to read the entire book as well as read any additional pieces from Jean Webster. Because, this book is entertaining, easy to follow and understand, inspirational, and intriguing. It’s great for all ages! And it takes an unusual writing style that I haven’t seen before—- in a form of a series of letters to Daddy Long Legs, a nickname she has given him base off the bits of information she knows about him. Which I found relatable and humorous since I’m known for giving people exclusive nicknames; that only I call them. Loving this book so far and definitely would recommend to others to read.
